An incredibly rare sea creature has been rescued from the jaws of death after restaurant workers were struck by its unusual color and called in experts for a second opinion.

A bright orange lobster arrived in a shipment at a Red Lobster restaurant in Hollywood, Florida, where an alternate universe would have seen it cooked on a plate.

But this one in particular was saved from becoming someone’s dinner party when staff members noticed its unusual golden coloring.

They called Ripley’s Aquarium in Myrtle Beach, which sent two members of its breeding team to inspect the crustacean. Sure enough, they identified it as an orange lobster – one in 30 million finds.

“Sometimes ordinary miracles happen, and Cheddar is one of them,” Mario Roque, a Red Lobster manager who led Cheddar’s rescue, said in the statement. “An incredible group of people helped us make this possible. We are so honored to have been able to save Cheddar and find him a good home.

Restaurant admitted they were incredibly proud of Mario for recognizing and ultimately saving her.

He has now found a forever home at the aquarium, whose staff said they were grateful that the Red Lobster team recognized how special they were. It was named “Cheddar” after Red Lobster’s famous Cheddar Bay biscuits.

“Ripley’s Aquarium of Myrtle Beach is honored to become Cheddar’s forever home,” the aquarium said in a statement. emailed to CNN. “Although the weird and unusual is part of everyday life here at Ripley’s, orange lobsters like Cheddar are truly one in 30 million.”

Red Lobster is on the front lines of saving incredibly rare lobsters. In 2021, restaurant workers at their location in GNN’s birthplace of Manassas, Virginia rescued another rare mutant known as the calico lobster, which they say was born at a rate of 1 in 30 million.

This one was a male and was called Freckles.

“Calico-colored lobsters like Freckles are so rare because their coloration makes them highly visible and therefore vulnerable to predators,” the Red Lobster spokesperson said. “Because a calico-colored lobster is so rare and vulnerable in the wild, it was important that we found a good home for it rather than releasing it into the wild where it was unlikely to survive.”

They contacted the Akron Zoo, which transferred the restaurant’s investigation to the Living Museum of Virginia, which arrived a few days later to take Freckles to their Chesapeake Bay Gallery.

“We hope Freckles brings great joy to museum visitors and leads a long and wonderful life,” the spokesperson said.
