Alibaba Group’s logistics arm, Cainiao Network, has started using energy generated from solar panels installed on the roof of its bonded warehouses in China to power operations inside.
The two warehouses, located in Hangzhou and Ningbo in east China’s Zhejiang Province, are the first to adopt renewable energy sources in China’s bonded areas, the platform said in a statement Thursday.
“The successful launch of Cainiao’s first warehouse area with a photovoltaic (PV) power generation system is just the start of the sustainable measures we have planned,” said Sun Beibei, general manager of the chain. global sourcing at Cainiao.
The move comes as the logistics industry spearheads a drive to establish a global green supply chain.
Chinese e-commerce companies were responsible for 53.3 million tons of carbon emissions in 2019, according to a report by the Energy Foundation. This is the equivalent of what 10 billion trees can offset in a year, of which logistics accounts for 29%, while warehousing accounts for 4%.
Energy efficient operations
Cainiao installed the photovoltaic power generation systems on 100,000 square meters of warehouse roof. They can store 7.862 megawatts of energy, with an annual output of more than 8 million kilowatt hours, enough to power more than 3,000 homes.
In the Hangzhou bonded warehouse, electricity powers energy-efficient operating systems, such as self-adjusting lighting and energy-saving conveyor belts that automatically adjust power consumption based on the package volume.
The electricity produced by the solar power system will be sufficient to power Cainiao’s warehouse operations. Any surplus electricity will be diverted for wider use on the grid.
Cainiao said solar power could reduce 5,535 tons of carbon emissions, which is equivalent to the annual carbon input of 700,000 trees.
“We aim to build an eco-friendly global logistics network for our merchants and brands around the world to reduce carbon footprint together,” Sun said.
This move is part of Cainiao’s efforts to build a global green supply chain. It has partnered with international brands like Nestlé to deploy a green supply chain through packaging recycling, smart inventory allocation and smart packaging algorithm, to name a few- one.
By 2023, Cainiao and its partners plan to install PV generation systems on the roofs of Cainiao’s bonded warehouses covering a combined area of 500,000 square meters.
Over 5,000 brands from 90 countries have entered the Chinese market through Cainiao’s bonded warehouses.
Cainiao aims to set a benchmark in the green logistics industry through the use of renewable energy and promote recycling capabilities, it said in a statement.
