Summary of work
We are looking for an experienced Technical Manager to lead a Solution Architecture team helping some of the fastest growing startups in Sub-Saharan Africa achieve success using AWS technologies.
Your team members will leverage their in-depth knowledge of AWS technologies to influence how solutions are offered, designed, and implemented for potential and existing customers.
In this role, you will hire and develop some of the best cloud-based solution architects in the industry, coach them on cloud adoption best practices, empower them to further develop their deep technical areas as well as their communication, presentation and strategy skills.
You will work in partnership with other teams within AWS such as account management, business development, service teams, marketing and professional services, prioritizing your initiatives and aligning goals to maximize value long-term.
You and your teams will shape and implement a strategy to create shared mindset and broad usage of AWS services within startup and high-growth customers. You will interact directly with customers to better understand their needs and align the right resources and tools to maximize their success. You will measure and deliver results, while staying in touch with the pace of innovation in AWS technology and its use cases. You will also need to be technically capable and credible so you can shape your team’s customer-focused initiatives and solutions. You will be able to exercise your creativity by linking technology to tangible solutions and educating customers on the art of the possible. At the heart of this will be your leadership in driving Solution Architects to create state-of-the-art reference architectures for a variety of use cases.
The ideal candidate has experience building and leading teams of senior engineers or solutions architects in large enterprises or startups. Customer facing experience is required, ideally as a solutions architect, consultant, pre-sales engineer or similar role.
A working knowledge of the AWS platform is desired but not required, provided you have strong leadership skills and a strong technical foundation in secure, scalable, and reliable IT architectures.
Main responsibilities of the position
Hire, onboard, train and develop new Solutions Architects and Solution Architect Managers. Above all, you must be an exceptional builder of great people
Coach Solution Architects in acquiring the skills necessary to conduct one-on-one, one-on-one technical sessions so they can transfer deep technical skills to customers considering or using AWS
In partnership with Account Management and Business Development teams, formulate and execute a customer-focused strategy to drive adoption of AWS
Capture and share best practice knowledge within the AWS Solution Architect community and startup ecosystem (Meetups, Accelerators, Incubators, VCs)
Guide and prioritize the development of white papers, datasheets, and other high-value customer guidance and best practices
Own the technical strategy that will increase customer value and adoption of well-architected AWS solutions among Startup customers.
Act as a conduit and liaison between customers, service engineering teams and support
Experience leading and growing teams of seasoned technology professionals, ideally in customer-facing roles
High level of comfort in communicating effectively between internal and external organizations, with technical and non-technical audiences.
Demonstrated ability to match technical solutions to real business problems
Business English communication skills
Track record of successful technical consulting and/or architecture engagements with startups or digital native clients
Experience as CTO/co-founder/mentor for a VC-backed tech start-up
Previous work experience as a Solutions Architect and/or managing a team of Solutions Architects.
Previous work experience in architecting/operating AWS-based solutions.
