New Ponemon Institute Study Shows Ransomware Attacks Against Healthcare Delivery Organizations May Lead to Increased Death Rate | Business

BOSTON – (BUSINESS WIRE) – Sep 22, 2021–

The Ponemon Institute, the leading research center dedicated to privacy, data protection and information security policy, surveyed 597 IT and IT security professionals to understand how COVID-19 had a impact on how healthcare delivery organizations (HDOs) protect patient care and information against more and more virulent cyber attacks, especially ransomware. The independent research report, titled The impact of ransomware on healthcare during COVID-19 and beyond, was commissioned by Censinet, the leading provider of IT risk management solutions in the healthcare industry.

For the first time, this research shows that ransomware attacks against healthcare facilities can have deadly consequences. Almost one in four healthcare providers have reported an increased death rate from ransomware. The onset of COVID-19 has introduced new risk factors for HDOs including remote working, new systems to support it, staffing issues and high demands on patient care. The research aims to help CIOs, CISOs, and healthcare risk managers understand to what extent HDOs are being targeted and determine the impact of these attacks. Both are discussed in depth in the main findings section of the report.

“Our results correlated the increase in cyber attacks, particularly ransomware, with negative effects on patient care, exacerbated by the impact of COVID on healthcare providers,” said Dr Larry Ponemon, President and founder of the Ponemon Institute. “We also analyzed the steps taken by HDOs to protect patient safety, data and healthcare operations to determine what is working, as many respondents have experienced more than one ransomware attack.

The report highlights the following impact of ransomware on patient care:

  • Increased death rate
  • No more complications from medical procedures
  • Delays in procedures and tests that resulted in poor results
  • Return of patients transferred or diverted to other establishments
  • Longer stays

“The combination of data breaches, ransomware attacks and COVID-19 has created the perfect cybersecurity storm and the worst two years on record for leaders in healthcare IT and security.” , said Ed Gaudet, CEO and Founder of Censinet. “The results of Ponemon Research are an urgent wake-up call for the healthcare industry to transform its cybersecurity and third-party risk programs or put the lives of patients at risk. “

The Ponemon Institute and Censinet will present the details of the independent research report in a webinar titled “Understanding the Impact of Ransomware on Healthcare During COVID-19 and Beyond.” It will premiere live on Wednesday, September 29, 2021 at 12:00 p.m. ET and will feature Dr. Larry Ponemon and Ed Gaudet, both leading advocates and experts in the healthcare information industry. register here
