Leh, December 18

Online booking, check-in and boarding pass issuance has been introduced for a key air mail service that serves the residents of Kargil once the strategic 434 km Srinagar-Leh national highway closes for winter months, officials said on Saturday.

The subsidized AN-32 Kargil Courier air service, provided by the Indian Air Force, is operated under a special arrangement when the highway is closed for five months during winters due to heavy snowfall, on- they stated.

Ladakh Civil Aviation Secretary Saugat Biswas chaired a high-level meeting here on Friday to ensure adequate arrangements are in place for the proper functioning of the air service, an official spokesperson said.

There would be a major change from past practices as several operations would now be managed digitally, Biswas said.

These include reservation systems, check-ins, issuance of boarding passes, cancellations, seat reassignment, payments and refunds, he said, adding that a robust portal had been put in place by the administration for this purpose.

The chief coordinator of the AN-32 service, Aamir Ali, gave a briefing on the preparation at Jammu and Srinagar airports for the smooth running of the service, the spokesperson said.

Representatives from Leh Air Base and Udhampur Air Command highlighted the Air Force’s issues and concerns during the meeting, he said.

The issues were discussed with the directors of the respective airports to fill in the gaps, the spokesperson said.

Biswas asked the deputy commissioner of Kargil for the prompt appointment of liaison officers and deputy nodal officers in Jammu, Srinagar and Kargil for coordination.

The CISF ensured the security arrangements, in accordance with standard operating procedures, and the issuance of security cards and free passage to the officers concerned, the spokesperson said.

Representatives of the divisional commissioner, Kashmir and Jammu, assured that facilities for Covid testing would be provided as directed, he said. PTI
