Oversized truck hits Auckland motorway bridge causing massive delays

An oversized truck that hit an overpass on the south lane of State Highway 1 this afternoon has now been cleared, according to Waka Kotahi.

Waka Kotahi reported the truck crashed into the upper deck of Penrose Rd in the left lane of the freeway at 2:35 p.m. this afternoon.

The transit agency said it expected the left lane to be closed for most of the afternoon.

Motorists have been advised to use an alternate route on SH16 or SH20, or delay their journeys this afternoon due to heavy traffic on both lanes of the freeway.

Structural engineers were dispatched to the scene to assess potential damage to the bridge, Waka Kotahi said.

At 4:30 p.m., Waka Kotahi reported that the crash had been cleared, but motorists were warned to expect 45-minute delays in southbound lanes.

The transit agency said there would be a complete closure of southbound SH1 lanes from Greenlane to Mount Wellington between 11:10 p.m. and 5 a.m. tonight.
