In order to overcome the financial losses facing the organization, Pune Mahanagar Parivahan Mahamandal Limited (PMPML) has now decided to start its freight and courier services.
Previously, the Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) launched this service within the state to generate revenue during last year’s lockdown and it continues. Currently, due to the statewide lockdown, very few PMPML buses are operating and that too only for emergency services. The daily income which had reached almost ₹1 crore has now barely gone down ₹1 lakh.
“We have suffered a huge loss of revenue over the past 1.5 years and it has had an impact on our daily operations. So last year, in August, we started to develop a plan to convert some of our buses to courier buses which we are starting soon now. We will be working with a private courier company for the same and all the necessary infrastructure will be provided by the company and we will take care of the driver’s salary, bus maintenance and fuel costs. In 13 of our depots, goods will be stored as well as in certain bus stations. From there, company employees will pick up the packages and deliver them to the final destination, ”said Rajendra Jagtap, President and CEO of PMPML.
Before the lockdown, PMPML’s average daily income was around ₹1.5 crore which has drastically reduced to ₹1 to 1.5 to lakh per day. The previous rider was around 11 lakh passengers per day with a fleet of over 2000 buses on the route. Currently, only about 100 buses serve people with essential services in the two cities.
“We have already converted some of our buses to this courier service bus for testing, in which the seats are removed and the tailgate is installed. And we also look at the technical legal aspects before starting this freight service. These buses went through the RTO as a passenger service bus and we will now make them courier. So what are the legal things that need to be fulfilled for this and what are all the required changes that our officials are working on. We are never in baggage transport or courier service until now and this will be the first time that PMPML will launch such a service in the city. If all goes well, we will begin service to the city soon. Jagtap added.
