‘Soul Crush’: Car theft leaves Bend comedian and delivery driver searching for answers

(Update: added video, comments from victim)

BEND, Ore. (KTVZ) — Alone in the parking lot of a McDonald’s, Zachary Derreberry watched his car drive off with his future.

DoorDash drivers work fast and fast. Drivers get in and out of their vehicle to pick up the order and deliver it to customers. Typically, drivers only get out of the car for a few minutes at a time.

Derreberry works for DoorDash and was picking up an order from McDonald’s on SE Third Street in Bend. He left his car running while he ran inside to grab the food, to save time.

When he got out, a man was driving away in his 2017 Ford Escape.

“Crushing. My whole future, my life, everything I had…” Derreberry told NewsChannel 21 on Wednesday.

The whole thing took less than two minutes.

“UPS leaves their car on, postal workers leave their car on, Domino’s Pizza leaves their car on,” Derreberry said. “Everyone goes in and out.”

Derreberry moved from Georgia to Bend in October to pursue a career in comedy. He was DoorDashing to supplement his income. But – this is no laughing matter.

“Now I have no way to make money, I have no way to go to comedy shows, I have no way to do anything,” he said. he declared. “And now I have to keep paying for the car.”

Derreberry has been working for the delivery service for over a year and makes around 35 deliveries a day. Nothing like this has ever happened to him before.

“I’ve never seen it work that way, like my car – I love this thing, so I never even imagined it,” he said, “I don’t even have a plan now. I’m baffled at the moment.”

Derreberry has insurance, but was told DoorDash was responsible for handling the situation. The Bend Police Department said it is investigating the case.

A friend created a GoFundMe for Derreberry to help with the costs.
