South Africa: Call to end blockade of roads

Transport Minister Fikile Mbalula has called for an end to the road blockade and for truckers to allow the engagement process to take its course.

His appeal follows this week’s ongoing engagements with truckers that took place on Tuesday.

“We believe we are close to reaching an agreement on the proposed interventions. Tuesday’s discussions followed previous engagements where the government gave stakeholders confidence on the measures being implemented to address the issues previously raised. “said the Minister. Thursday.

Mbalula said he was working with Ministers of Labor and Employment as well as Interior as well as relevant stakeholders to address issues raised by truckers and small truck operators.

“We have noted complaints about the slow implementation of interventions in the areas we have agreed on. A follow-up engagement is expected on Sunday with all stakeholders.

“We all need to understand that we all have a responsibility to ensure that economic activity is not hampered, as this will inevitably lead to job losses due to the economic downturn,” the minister said.
