Suspect who was under arrest escapes from EMS unit, steals truck, may be armed

West Columbia, SC 8/12/2021 (Paul Kirby) – A suspect who had been arrested in the Lexington area escaped from a Lexington County EMS unit on Wednesday afternoon. The man now identified as Daniel Hill III was handcuffed with a law enforcement transportation belt when he fled from the ambulance in the Sunset Boulevard and Leaphart Road area. He was last seen wearing a gray t-shirt and jeans and is said to have a Superman tattoo on his chest.

Law enforcement had been called to Lexington earlier in the afternoon, where they first encountered Hill. Because he appeared to be under the influence of narcotics, he was arrested and loaded into an EMS unit to be transported to Lexington Medical Center for evaluation. During his initial detention, he assaulted a law enforcement officer.

Law enforcement agencies from the Lexington County Sheriff’s Department, West Columbia City Police Department, Lexington Police Department and SC Highway Patrol are currently involved in the search. At 1:30 p.m. a large perimeter was set up around the Southeastern Freightliners area. K-9s were on hand to help.

Currently, law enforcement suspects the suspect may have stolen a 2005 Burgundy Ford F-350 right-board pickup truck with a V-10 engine in the area. The truck . which has a double cabin, had a gun inside. They have now classified this suspect as armed and dangerous as a precautionary measure as they attempt to confirm the escapee is the person who took the truck.

Police are asking anyone who sees this man to stay away and dial 911. It is a rapidly evolving story. Please check for updates.
