Ukraine and the EU sign an agreement on road freight transport

Ukraine and the European Union have signed an agreement on the transport of goods by road, which eliminates the need for authorizations for Ukrainian carriers to carry out bilateral and transit traffic.

According to Ukrinform, this was reported by the press service of the Ukrainian Ministry of Infrastructure.

“Today in Lyon, France, Ukraine and the European Union signed an agreement on the transport of goods by road. It eliminates the need for Ukrainian carriers to obtain the appropriate authorizations for bilateral traffic and transit to EU countries and avoids stopping the export of Ukrainian products through road checkpoints,” the statement read.

The agreement also includes measures to facilitate the recognition of driving licenses. From now on, Ukraine and the EU exempt holders of driving licenses issued by one of the parties from the obligation to have an international driving permit.

The one-year deal includes the possibility of an extension and temporarily comes into effect on June 29. The agreement will be applied on a permanent basis once all ratification procedures have been completed.

The ministry recalled that during the first month of the full-scale Russian invasion, the Ministry of Infrastructure managed to reach agreements on the temporary revocation of trucking licenses with 12 EU countries, including Austria , Hungary, Italy, Latvia, Estonia, Bulgaria, Germany, Denmark, Lithuania, Romania, Greece and Slovakia.

As noted, since the Ukraine-EU Free Trade Agreement was signed in 2016, trade with the European Union has nearly doubled and trucking volume has increased by 42%. At the same time, the number of authorizations for international transport to individual EU countries was decreasing.
